My Selfie – My Cultural Identity

The International Museum Day, a celebration held every year around mid-May, is approaching. In order to increase public awareness on Malta’s rich Cultural Heritage, ICOM-Malta is encouraging museum patrons to participate in this international event. This year, the theme of the International Museum Day is “Museum collections make connections.”

As the world moves away from traditional methods of engagement, museums must find new ways to engage with their communities. This can be achieved by making their collections more accessible and relevant to their stakeholders. This theme demonstrates how museum exhibitions have the ability, not only to tell a story, but also to engage with the community through shared memory. It also encourages public awareness on the role of museums in the development of society and promotes the connection between different types of collections and their audiences.

In a bid to increase the number of museum visitors, as well as awareness about our cultural identity, ICOM-Malta is inviting you to participate in the ‘selfie competition’ it is organising with the title MY SELFIE – MY CULTURAL IDENTITY. Participants are encouraged to visit their favourite museum and take a ‘selfie’ with their favourite artefact. These selfies will be uploaded on the competition’s Facebook page, and the photo with the most likes by noon on the 31st May wins a €100 cash prize. Apart from uploading the selfie and tagging the Museum in which the object resides, participants must also state the reason why that object is their favourite.

Regulations:

  • The competition is open to people of all ages.
  • Flash photography and tripods are not permitted.
  • In the event of any disorderly or improper conduct or contravention of museum regulations, visitors may be requested to leave the premises.
  • At no point participants may jeopardize the safety of the object, their safety or that of other visitors.
  • Any photographs posted within social media, which in any way break any law, will be automatically reported and deleted.
  • The object must be within the display of an official museum within the Maltese islands.
  • The ‘selfie’ must be clear. Photos may be in colour, black & white, or sepia and can be edited.
  • The ‘selfie’ must be clearly captioned with the name and location of the museum.
