Until just a few generations ago, children used to inhabit the streets where they ran, jumped, danced, climbed and played. This is no more the case as children today are less physically active, and their lives have become scheduled from dawn to dusk with no time to play.

MC Adventure, a company specialising in adventure activities of every type, organised in collaboration with the Valletta Local Council and MOVE, a non-government organisation for the promotion of sports and culture, Let’s Play, an innovative project devised to re-connect school children with play and the great outdoors. The project promotes culture and history through games and play, exposing the participants to the cultural aspect of Malta’s capital city in a fun and lively way.

Valletta, Malta’s capital and a World Heritage site, is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world. Its grid of narrow streets, home to many historical attractions, boasts countless Baroque buildings from the 16th century, built by the Order of the Knights of St. John. Tiny quaint shops, restaurants and cafés dot Valletta’s narrow side streets, while its main streets are lined with larger shops and offices, though it is rarely thought of as a venue for sporting activities.

This centuries-old location was the perfect backdrop for the Let’s Play project. Besides promoting Valletta’s unique culture and history, the project enhanced the school children’s learning experience through engaging and dynamic out-of-the-classroom activities, such as traditional games and treasure hunts around the city’s historic narrow streets, abseiling down the city’s 30m high bastions from Hastings Gardens, and zip lining across a wide gap in the rocks below the ramparts of iconic Fort St. Elmo. These activities challenged and entertained the students, yet helped them become more aware of, and enriched their knowledge about the city’s cultural heritage.
